Bad As They Seem (Hayden, 1995) is a self-reflective song portraying a young man’s perspective toward his current situation of living. The song shadows negative outlooks of living under parental supervision, unnerving feelings toward a younger girl (neighbor) and hidden infatuations with her mother. The song’s character is very dry and monochromatic in tonality with lyrical slurring, producing a continual stream of conviction. The typographic video is visually summarized by different typefaces created by various materials that would be found at the narrator’s house. Refrigerator magnets, vinyl tile, carpet and stencil letters shape the voice.
